spruced-up journals?

although i dig a good moleskin, i've never splurged to buy my very own. i've never thought my scribbles were of that caliber; hence the dollar store journal. and the dollar store mac tac! usually i line my drawers with this stuff or the odd box, but thought it would be fun to do a little craft project with these one dollar journals and some sticky faux wood. here's my tutorial pics! ha!

wall art

beautiful wallcoverings from grenville design.

designed by canadian, miriam grenville who designs all the patterns by hand, scans and and then digitizes them.

this featured design, jacobean damask is 8 feet by 12 feet.

folk lamp

the floral lamp project began as a collaboration between a textile and a furniture designer in hopes of fusing two distinctly different worlds to produce an outcome that expresses the essence of what each has to offer. taking a closer look at each of the studios, the two paired up to develop a design that would both, express the intricate detail of textile design, and the utilitarian usability of furniture. verging on sentimentalism, the project references traditional floral textile motifs, combined with new technology of laser cutting therefore melding the past with the current.

materials: veneer, paper backer
designers: mathew birtch and marta pietrzyk of vest collective, toronto.

loyal loot

as their "about" section states, "loyal loot collective was created in 2003 and currently involves the individual and collaborative design work of a group of canadian women. as a collective, loyal loot strives to create designs with a natural quality by staying true to materials. the inherent value of these designs is meant to last a lifetime ensuring that they retain a non-disposable presence and remain precious to their owner, becoming more and more meaningful as they age. loyal loot exhibits their work together and aims to create community in design, within the collective as well as with fellow designers. Members of loyal loot are involved in several creative facets, specializing in furniture, products and clothing". they are: carmen douville, doha chebib, dara humniski, anna thomas.

a couple of my favorites, the cupcake table, they say, "was meant to focus on function with a decorative detail".

" the white surface is made of inexpensive, yet durable countertop laminate which is easy to clean. the edge is detailed with a scallop to suggest a fancy tablecloth".

+materials. walnut, formica
+design. doha chebib

and the trophy mirror, they say on their site, " is influenced by taxidermy plaques. the outline is reminiscent of the hunting history associated with prized victories."

+materials. mirror
+design. carmen douville

loyal loot was invited to include dara humniski's coat hang in wallpaper magazine's "wallpaper world edit exhibtiion". the exhbition, designed by zaha hadid included 10 international creative centres and 10 cutting edge designs from each country. the exhibition took place during milan's international furniture fair, salone el mobile.

mibo

oh if i had all the money to buy all the lamps i post about. and who can resist a fun pendant lamp like this mibo from design public. apparantly, british seaside resorts are the inspiration for these mibo lamps. "from bold deckchair stripes to nostalgic patterns that would be equally at home on a 1950s bikini, these designs recall a time of simplicity and style". mibo shades are hand-made. $98.

port 2 nebo peklo

congratulations to natalie and mav on their collaboration of this special edition letterpress called "aurum stria" now for sale at little paper planes. and to think i missed seeing them, just visiting the little paper planes site yesterday. they look lovely!

things i love thursdays

i love graffiti. i love little surprises here and there. i love to see street art, it makes me feel the city is alive! i know, i know, it's a touchy subject; and i'm not into vandalism or defacing property. but there is also a good side to graffiti. sometimes it comes in small messages, like the "you are beautiful" sticker i found the other day, or "love heals" i saw today. perhaps it's brightening up an abandoned, neglected building, or taking the boredom out of waiting for a train to pass by (thank goodness for train car graffiti). i think what amazes me most, is that some beautiful pieces are so masterfully done in such a short amount of time.

sabine brandt

i am feeling so lucky and spoiled today! a huge THANK you to sabine brandt for this most amazing package. beautiful inspiring designs all the way from denmark; can you imagine how lucky i am! you can see the detailed notes on my flickr.

midori-japan.co.jp

i have been so mesmerized by japanese stationary lately. and it's one of those things where i don't even realize it's japanese, but as soon as i pull it off the shelf, it is. so i'm drawn towards it, it's funny how things like that happen. i found this line from midori and just had to show a few of them here. i especially like the idea of the first one, a word book.

go hotels go!

it's funny or perhaps serendipitous, but i had read an article on some more hotels that had followed the artist designed rooms idea like hotel fox in denmark but here in canada in the april 2006 elle canada magazine and was just about going to post it, when my friend alex emails me and says she thinks i should check out hotel fox. she said she thought room 414 would suit me perfectly.

so two new hotels to be added to this list are in toronto, the gladstone hotel transformed by local talent. my favorites being 304 and i think i would have the best rest in 411.

and the dominion hotel in vancouver designed by emily carr institute of art and design grads along with street artists. liking rooms 116 and 207

and apparantly there is one in berlin too called kuenstlerheim-luise (above photo). rooms 300 and 304 are my favorites.

and alex if you're reading this, i think i would reserve room 509 for you (at the fox)!

and everyone else reading this, indulge me please, i'd love to know your faves!
