hand felting

i have been on the hunt for a special type of thick felt (wool felt i have finally found out recently) that will almost or will stand up on it's own). i have this big idea and need this special type of material. well yesterday "voila" it all came together, although it is going to be a bit of work. the felt you find in fabric stores is just too flimsy and synthetic for what i want to accomplish; and so i have called wholesaler after wholesaler, upholsterer after upholsterer and no luck. so i ran into the perfect felt (already made into something at a craft store) and was told it was hand made with roving wool. what is roving wool? after googling and googling, it didn't look like i was going to find anything local and would have to order this unknown fibre online. but "yay" i ran into some yesterday! i just bought a little bag and it wasn't the color i want to do my project with, but at least i can have a go making a little bit to see if it'll all work out. here's a tutorial i found on handfelting that i'm going to try. now i'm off to find my bamboo beach mat. stay tuned.

things i like

bwbike, originally uploaded by poppytalk.

since i'm unable to post through blogger today (down for maintenance), i'm using flickr and hopefully it'll work. i guess if you see this post it did.

i thought i'd list a few things i like today. like this bike; (as you can see the seat is aptly protected from the almost certain downpour expected each day in these parts this time of year).

here's a link to some great dutch bikes sold by a local company jorg and olif. i like their introduction: "everyday we make choices that influence and shape the way we live. and it's often the little things we do that make the biggest difference (and bring us the greatest joy) jorg&olif is inspired by individuality, imagination, good living, and style. it's a way of being, a reminder of living in the now and being aware of the beauty around us."

a new blog - its (k)not wood - dedicated to all thing faux bois (fake wood).

pinhole's photography - using a pinhole camera at times.

and adobe studio exchange - an excellent resource for adobe products like downloads for new brushes, actions, and even tutorials.

anti-social

if i could do it over, i would be a skater-chick (just like i'd be a surfer); it's one of those sports where i think you have to start early though or things will go badly fast. like i started po-go-ing at a very young age and could pogo past 100 any time any where. don't ask me now mind you, but i was a mean po-go-er. but i also know it's one of those things you start early to avoid major head contusions. i could still dream of being a skateboard designer though i guess and found some inspiration at our local anti-social shop. like this one by keith jones:

i know this set is a bit officious, but think of the possibilities: lounge chair with tubular chromed steel frame. plywood seat and back in beech plywood, oak, maple, wenge, rosewood, birch or mahogany wood with frontal upholstering and covering in soft leather or fabric; maybe in green?

eine's shopfront shutter graffiti letters

More Letters By Eine, originally uploaded by Dave Gorman.

so cool to happen upon this complete set of alphabets by graffiti artist, eine. these shopfront shutter graffiti letters were taken by flickr star dave gorman. apparantly it took him only three trips over two nights to get a complete alphabet set thanks to commenters who helped him find the last couple of missing stragglers.

alphabet

how great! alphabet an exhibition of hand-drawn lettering and experimental typography. wish it was coming here. focusing on an ordinary subject that we see each day, often in the hundreds of thousands, alphabet presents 26 letters as more than just shapes for conveying information. the 48 artists and designers in this show conceive and interpret the alphabet in surprising and inventive ways, ranging from graceful and polished to witty and unconventional. the 60 alphabets featured in alphabet were created by artists in north america, europe, and asia, and represent work from well-known typographers and designers as well as rising artists and design students.

day 30 (really)

I lied. DAY 1!!!! DAMMIT, originally uploaded by somethingsflesh.

we can't even break a record with the rain. today was supposed to be day 30, but really it's day 2. because after 27 days, yes 27 DAYS of straight rain, it stopped for one day. and had we not, we would've broke a record for consecutive days raining. now what's really sad about this is the next day which was yesterday after the day it didn't rain, it started raining again. so now we are on day 2 really, and i'm sure, i am quite sure, it will probably rain for another 27 days. the forecast calls for showers, and then rain. you do not know the difference between what showers is in comparison to rain, until you have lived on the wet coast. am i going crazy? YES! (and thank you to my friend alex for this beautiful photo - she doesn't mind the rain - now that is crazy!).

on the flip side, did you notice how green everything was? and don't you want to slurp up that collected rainwater?
