There's No Place Like Here: Luxton Lake

Love this video (produced by Tara) from Etsy's "There's No Place Like Here" series where they feature a retro renovation at Luxton Lake in upstate New York of the cosy cottage of Luxton Lake etsy shop owner, Tina Spangler. Spangler uprooted herself from her New York City lifestyle and moved into a forgotten community of Narrowsburg, NY, called Luxton Lake. Once a vacation destination for African-Americian New Yorkers, the area was mostly abandoned in the 70's when a dam was removed and the lake drained. Tina purchased a 1950's fixer-upper and took the leap to fix it up. The result is adorable featuring an awesome retro interior. Click here to see the rest of the article.

Hulaseventy: Out of the Booth

by Hulasventy

Way back in February, I stood in a cozy little Portland shop called Ampersand and thumbed through boxes crammed full of old snapshots. While I happily mined for vintage photographic gold, the owner (Myles) told me about about a photobooth exhibit they were planning for the summer. I was already totally smitten with the place but that did it. Photobooth enthusiast that I am, that sort of sealed the deal. I was officially in love. Of course, summer felt like seven hundred years away and I completely forgot about the show. Up until a couple of days ago.

Out Of The Booth features photobooth enlargements from the Robert E. Jackson collection and just opened last night. Portland peeps, I'm fairly certain this will be awesome. Unfortunately, I am currently several hundred miles from Portland but some of you are not. I'm thinking you should go. Because I'm telling you, it's really going to be something.

Stunning images from a spectacular collection await you.

Out Of The Booth runs through August 23rd but if you missed the opening last night (like I did), Ampersand will be open tonight for Last Thursday on Alberta Street. Beautiful vintage photobooth frames plus frosty air-conditioning. Not a bad combination. Especially considering that nutty Portland heat wave I so narrowly escaped.

And if you just can't make it all the way out to Portland, there's always the Ampersand $5 snapshots for sale online!

No. 43. Because you are not just buying an item, you are buying a piece of the artist. You are supporting the love, sweat, tears, future, family, confidence, mind, body and soul of that person. It creates an amazing relationship between 2 people: the buyer and seller. You are not just a customer, you are a supporter, a fan, a collector of art. Kim Quinn.

No. 44.Human rights & ecological aspects. Buy handmade and you support a true artist. You can be sure that human rights are respected in the making of your gift. Handmade gifts are for many reasons often more ecological than mass produced: indie artists are superb recyclers (and we mustn't forget upcycling, upcycled gifts are a big hit this year!) and of course handmade in most cases outlasts mass produced. Paperiaarre.

No. 45. The items are much more fashion forward....there is no "wait-time" for large businesses to design and then mass-produce. One indie designer can list something *today* that he/she made *today.* (So it wasn't designed and planned last Christmas...for this Christmas). Annie and Olive.

No. 48. High Quality: the things I make are things I would buy. Many times I need things and when I look for them at the shops I don't find anything that I like or that covers my expectatives. And in fact, this is one of the reasons I began selling handmade things. It was common when I made one for me and then my friends began asking me for them. Martha Gomez.

sophik.bigcartelsophik.bigcartel.com
No. 49. Buying handmade gives me that instant feel-good factor, knowing I'm supporting a fellow artist and that my money goes directly to them. I love the personal touch, whether I'm emailing with a customer or talking to a seller - I get the best of both worlds! The handmade revolution has meant that art is suddenly so much more accessible, and the pleasure derived from having beautiful art in your home is made all the more special when you can email the artist and thank them. Susannah Conway, Unravelling.

French-Inspired Pottery

I just love this line from Studio ÉLAN so much that I had to go into it a little bit more. I mentioned their berry bowl earlier in one of my "70 Reasons to Buy Handmade" posts, but I just couldn't pass up their french butter dish, because firstly, I love butter and secondly soft butter all the more. I usually only see these in white porcelain, so to see a french butter dish made from stoneware (especially in such a beautifully glazed "light blue" like this makes it all the more special. If you're not familiar with the french butter dish, it's a very simple and old method. Just pack the top lid with softened butter, then fill the base partially with water (to create a seal when the lid is inverted into it), and then add a bit of salt to the water if the butter is unsalted. Change the water every 3 to 5 days for freshness. Leave at room temperature and serve soft butter right from the lid. The other piece that matches this set is the brie baker. I love baked brie (my sister makes it so well). Hers' is a recipe with a topping of sun-dried tomatoes, garlic and thyme. And so easy, just bake at 350 for 10 minutes (served with french bread or crackers). Click here for more items in this glaze.

Pink and Silver Glamour Wedding

.
.
Pink paired with silver gives off such a Hollywood glamour vibe. Think polished shiny surfaces and a gown that's red carpet worthy. Don't go overboard though. Keep it slightly casual with light touches of lace and flowers which have more of a garden feel and the whole style of the wedding will be very pretty whilst still maintaining a glitzy edge.

For the off beat bride, a pink gown instead of the traditional white could be a show stopper. Dress your bridesmaids in a lighter shade of pink or even white for a modern take on an old trend. Jewelled shoes add a touch of bling.

Keep the reception decor from looking too feminine by using a clear marquee or even clear acrylic chairs just to up the modern factor. Escort cards are displayed on a bed of pink petals and the ring pillows are unusual crocheted versions.

A lace stencilled cake in a clean square shape sits atop an acrylic plate stand, ideal if you're using clear chairs. Add a signature cocktail in amazing glasses (these ones are from Preston Baileys collection) and some macaroons in grey and pink for the dessert bar or favours.

Pretty Stoneware

stoneware2

Loving this lacey stoneware for the bath from Anthropologie they just listed. I can't seem to get out of that shop lately, and these new stoneware pieces aren't helping. What I'm liking most about these is they don't have the Anthropologie price tag. Ranging from $13 - 40 (Canadian). The Trinket piece (bottom right of first image) opens into three vessels.
