Carnations have one of the worst reputations in the flower world. They seem to be synonymous with old fuddy duddy arrangements. Floral designers however have given the humble little blossom a new lease of life. Instead of hiding it as a filler in monstrous arrangements, the simple carnation is being used as a focus. It works extremely well with more modern shapes and when used solely on its own. They're in season all year round, are available in lots of colours and the best news of all? So affordable you can go a little crazy. If flower meanings have any sway with you I would steer away from striped, red or yellow varietys however as these mean "refusal", "my poor heart" and "disdain" respectively.
