Another exhibit at the IDSwest show this year was FUTURE MASTERS: Young Designers West.

In partnership with Artsy-Dartsy.com - Vancouver’s Art & Design Guide, FUTURE MASTERS was a way for design students and recent graduates to present their recent work to the public.

In their statement, "A majority of the submissions demonstrate boldness and pride in design’s capacity to better our world; work that is humanitarian in nature: from comforting sick children to considering the emotional need of people with disabilities. Architectural projects were also presented; they strive to step beyond the trivial notion of sustainability, reflecting on the lyrical nature of proper public-private integration."

IDS West 2010 - Part 3

"CoRkEd DeSiGnS", a special exhibit at the IDSwest this year, challenged seven designers to create a new product using wine corks. Above Formgiver Design Studios were inspired by all things containing a percentage of alcohol. They decided that the cork should have a chance at being more than a mere stopper and after many experiments created the perfect blend creating a bottle of cork containing light.

And Contexture Design sculpted a series of corks, which were being used to cork 32 bottles of hand crafted 8th Generation Wine. Once removed, the wine-dyed corks make a complete chess set, including 16 white and 16 red wine cork pieces. Custom crates have also been designed for both the red and white wine bottles, which come together to form the chessboard.



And although not made of cork (and not part of the exhibit), we thought this stool (see below) made out of a mixture of rice and glue (the Daisy Stool) was rather interesting coming out from a company in Thailand who has made Vancouver it's home. Maai Living creates Scandinavian-influenced furniture paired with materials from Thailand. We also loved their Shell Dining Chairs made out of hand woven rattan with a stainless steel base (these images from their website). They also make wood furniture (Maai means wood in Thai) using oak,ash or teak.

IDS West 2010 - Part 1

Langley-based, Preform showcase T-House, a 900sqft modular home. Preform Construction is a high-end prefabrication company specializing in custom modular building.IDSwest launched today featuring local, national and international exhibitors. Headlining the show, Karim Rashid and Sarah Richardson who packed the room Friday night for an intimate talk about design. Based in North Vancouver, Brent Comber is internationally known for his use of ancient sources to create urban forms.




Christian Woo is a Vancouver based woodworker who designs custom furniture.


Herban is a versatile wool felt gardening system for dwellings limited by space. It is designed and manufactured using recycled materials here in Vancouver by mubi.ca.

I've gathered all my IDSwest photo's together, well most of them, I do have a few straglers and other products I saw that I'd like to talk about more (next week), but thought I'd make a fast slide show for today and then go into detail with some of them later. IDSwest: Off the Hook + Contexture Design

Each year IDSwest challenges the design community with a unique design project through their Off the Hook series. This year, each participant was asked to take a typical telephone booth, something we are all using less and less of these days and transform it into something else. The idea, to keep them out of our landfills and for showcasing new products from something everyone knows (or remembers) and has likely used at one time or another.

Vancouver's Contexture Design responded to the challenge by exploration of shelter and the concept of home, as it relates to homelessness.

" For many homeless people without the benefit of a cell phone, the public phone booth is an important amenity to connect beyond local neighborhoods. We see the loss of the phone booth as a loss of public infrastructure in our cities. Our design reshapes that public facility by creating a stylish, small home - a "Home Phone". We're not suggesting that the Home Phone is a realistic solution to the homelessness problems in Vancouver, instead an opportunity for discussion. "

IDSwest: The Cross Design Booth + Media Booth

Just arrived back from IDSwest (Thurs. eve) and have heaps of photo's to sort through, but I thought I'd gather one of the prettiest booths of the show, from The Cross Design Studio here in Vancouver. Owners Darci Ilich and Stephanie Vogler along with Peter Wilds, their in-store designer created a cosy, yet quaint scene for the show. From the fabric surrounding the sink and covering the chairs by Nina Campbell (which also comes in wallpaper) to the most exquisite plates, mirrors, chandeliers and that daybed. The Cross Design also designed the Media Booth for the show, with more stunning wallpapers and furniture covered in lustrous gem coloured fabrics. IDSwest this Weekend + Pecha Kucha

For those of you here in the Vancouver area this weekend, The Interior Design Show West is happening starting tonight, September 17th and running through to Sunday, September 20th, 2009. IDSwest is Western Canada’s annual premiere residential design show featuring 200 exhibitors showcasing quality products and services to an audience of industry professionals, architects, designers, consumers and media.

Thursday is the Opening Night Gala featuring Pecha Kucha Volume 7, presented by the folks at Cause+Affect. Pecha Kucha is a presentation show where they invite presenters on to the stage. The presentation at IDSwest will be connected in some way with the design industry. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each - giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show. Click here to see the list of presenters. It should be an interesting one with many great west coast designers.
