Vancouver Art Show Tonight: Robert Edmonds - Voice Echo

I Wish I Was on Holiday: New Paintings by Matte Stephens

San Francisco design store and gallery, Rare Device presents: I Wish I was on Holiday New Paintings by Matte Stephens.

Inspired by the fine art of living, Matte Stephens paints with gouache his happy visions of today’s optimistic friends and families with a refined twist. He has a fondness for anything old and all friendly creatures. These inspirations are apparent through his color palate and immediate sense of whimsy and design elements found in almost all of his paintings. They are immediately friendly and reminiscent of a simpler time he wishes was today. His illustration clients include Herman Miller, American Express and IBM.

The work will occupy the Rare Device gallery May 7 – June 1, 2010. A reception for the show will be held Friday, May 7, 2010 from 7 - 9 pm. Rare Device is located at 1845 Market Street between Valencia and Guerrero Streets in San Francisco.

WEST: A multimedia collaboration by Sarah Baugh and Nicole Lavelle

Land gallery will present WEST, a mixed-media (papercut, collage, drawing, pattern and installation) project by Portland artists Sarah Baugh and Nicole Lavelle. Natives of Idaho and California, these two now call Oregon home. Together they will muse on their place within the great American West. WEST features studies in materials and narrative, and the show's collaboration will reveal a synthesized cobbling of shared and individual experience. Baugh and Lavelle draw from graphic design, craft and art to wrangle an understanding of the pioneering spirit and the natural beauty of their region. The exhibition will be on display from February 12–28, 2010. Opening reception on February 12 from 6–8pm. Click here to see the exhibit being set up.

This Week from Lisa Congdon: It Takes Two

This week I wanted to share with you some of the work at one of my favorite New England galleries. In honor of Valentines Day Susan Schwake of Artstream Gallery in New Hampshire has curated a show in which couples--both of whom are artists--have collaborated on pieces. "My inspiration for curating this show was simple," say Susan. "Valentines day is my favorite holiday. It's about celebrating love. I thought about a lot of the artists I know and realized how they had hooked up with other artists as partners. I thought it would be fun to explore this relationship and found that not only did the couples embrace it but most all of them had a wonderful time doing so."

Customizable Time Zone Clock - Choose Your Cities! £45

We are loving this customizable handmade and screenprinted Time Zone Clock designed by Crispin Finn, a small London based design partnership founded and run by a graphic designer and fine artist, their shared love of screenprinting, stationary and vernacular design inspired them to collaborate and develop their trademark style.

Working solely in red, white and blue, a restriction they initially set themselves in order to hand produce simple and affordable designs, the colour scheme has become part of the Crispin Finn identity.

This clock along with many other cool art pieces are the current Christmas Exhibition at the Soma Gallery across the pond in Bristol, UK. All the work from their Christmas Exhibition is now online and includes a beautiful print by Rob Ryan (below), original watercolours by Jody Barton, Crispin Finn's Customizable Time zone clock and prints from Anthony Burrill.

They're open seven days a week during December. Monday - Saturday 10:30am - 5:30pm and Sunday 11am - 4pm. And they can now frame prints, so if you're buying a print as a gift and would like it to be framed then please feel free to get in touch!

Fragments in RPM

This looks like an interesting show here in Vancouver this weekend. Artist Robert Edmonds (known for his awesome gig posters) is exhibiting prints and poster remnants exploring musical memory and the visual attachment we give to sounds. The show, Fragments in RPM opens on Sunday, November 8th, 2009 (4:30PM) at Public on Main (3289 Main Street, Vancouver). Mixed media: impressions taken from 33 and 45 vinyl with cut fragments of concert posters created over the past decade. Fragmented posters include: The Cure, Flaming Lips, REM, Radiohead, Gomez, Polyphonic Spree, Los Lobos, Franz Ferdinand, New Pornographers, Queens Of The Stoneage and more.

The show features ghost paintings on vintage postcards, classic monster silhouettes on science textbook pages, and haunting phrases printed on patterned paper – and our opening party last Friday included holiday-appropriate details like "spooky brew" and candy corn of course!

New Show: The Royal Family

Industtrees is proud to present Aprile Elcich’s first gallery showcase from October 16th through November 12th, 2009.

Entitled “The Royal Family”, this mixed media collage series was inspired by a pair of scrapbooks found at the St. Lawrence antique market filled with newspaper clippings of Queen Elizabeth and her family during the 1950's and 60's. Aprile's collages recreate the scrapbooks, changing the composition and adding materials to give each page a deeper meaning. All of these pieces are created on the actual scrapbook pages themselves, resulting in brittle and delicate collages which further the character and feelings of nostalgia in each piece.

A fine collection of English cheeses and drinks will be served starting at 8PM opening night (October 16th). Come out and enjoy the artwork, atmosphere and a little taste of monarchy!

Jennifer Judd McGee and Julia Rothman drew a flower design with Sharpies on the window for their new show at Nahcotta Gallery

Art Show: The Passengers, Tina Berning

"The Passengers", is a new solo show by Berlin artist, Tina Berning at gallery hanahou opening September 10 with an reception 6-9pm.

"Berning continues to explore the relationships between conditioned aesthetics and supposed subjective ambition in the canon of contemporary visuals. The drawings formulate the artist's own images of the human body, its inadequacy and its fundamental relation to self-determination. Tina Berning releases figures out of their heteronomous, medial contexts and shifts them into an interplay between voyeurism and exhibitionism. She uses her paintings and drawings as carriers to extricate subjects from the contemporary alienated incapacitation. Codes and matrices blanket faces, streaks of colour lie like shadows over the delicate silhouettes. Interventions that follow Tina Berning's study open the plainness of schemes into the ambiguity of expression. She makes subtle corrections to the standard, uniform face and figure, enabling a look of physical expressiveness to return. Even when they appear fragile and vulnerable, the faces and images of the people take on a form that is more resistive."

Greenwich House Pottery Centennial celebration Tonight!

Tonight is the kickoff for the Greenwich House Pottery Centennial celebration in New York. 100 Years of Clay Centennial reception, showcasing some of the world’s most noted ceramic artists, in a celebration of the art, artists, New York City and Greenwich House Pottery as a NYC cultural institution. Plus, the installation of two new exhibits:

First, "Who Lives in Greenwich Village--It draws inspiration from the Manahatta Project (themannahattaproject.org). The artists superimposed images of native plants and animals on the Greenwich Village street grid, and each block is its own little segment. (Above image - as a sneak peek, but I'm told one has to see in person to give the whole thing justice).

Second, "New Amsterdam at 400: A Celebration of Contemporary Dutch Ceramics."

Don't Worry, I Have a Map: Amy Rice

Mixed-media artist Amy Rice has a new solo show coming up this October at the Soo Visual Arts Center in Minneapolis with new works entitled. "Don't Worry, I Have a Map".

"I have been daydreaming on the shapes of old picture frames, the silhouettes of tiger lilies, bees and chickens, vintage camper trailers, swan paddleboats and true love. 
I know, for the first time in my life what I want my future to look like and the work it will take to get there. I’ve spent a lot of years painting from my past; in this body of work I have made a shift, I am painting my present and mapping out my future." - Amy Rice

Beginning with not-so-traditional print making methods (hand cut stencils and a Japanese Gocco printmaking toy) Rice makes original, one-of-kind pieces by additionally employing acrylic, gouache, ink and collage. Her “canvases” range from weathered wood panels and found objects to antique envelopes, age-worn love letters, and found journal pages yellowed with time. 


Rice draws inspiration for her work from childhood memories, both real and imagined (or just slightly exaggerated with time), the urban community in which she lives, vintage botanical prints, her dog Ella, bicycles, street art, gardening, random found objects, collective endeavors that challenge hierarchy, acts of compassion, downright silliness and things with wings.

Smile On Your Brother Art Show

Poppytalk Handmade participant, Valerie Thai of Cabin + Cub along with her husband, Roger Allen of Crooked Walker have collaborated together (under Crooked Walker) to create a one-off skateboard as part of the Smile On Your Brother art show. A selection of artists and designers were asked to create art boards. All the boards will be auctioned online (Aug 24th - Oct. 25th) to help raise funds towards donating 100 skateboards to disadvantaged youth across Canada.

They chose to woodburn theirs (love) and here is a link to the other boards in the auction.

The boards will be in a traveling exhibit across Canada, and will be displayed at Livestock in Vancouver on August 24th - 26th. It will carry on to Calgary, Saskatchewan, Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City.

Mike Perry Giant Zine Art Show @ Grass Hut

Nothin' could be cooler than being down in Portland this Friday for the Mike Perry's Giant Zine Artshow. The fine folks at the Grass Hut have created an awesome concept for a show, where all the framed art hanging on the gallery walls is also printed (uncolored) and bound into Giant Zines. The show opens July 3rd, 6-10pm at Grass Hut, 811 E. Burnside, Portland, OR.
