Hula Seventy: Lodekka!

Double Decker Vintage Dress Shop? In my fair city of Portland, Oregon? Yes please! I first visited Lodekka back in early January and friends, it is as awesome as you might think. And the owner, Erin Sutherland, was incredibly sweet and personable. We talked for a bit while I shopped for vintage goodies and I was delighted to learn how Lodekka came about. After losing her job back in April of 2010, Erin threw herself wholeheartedly into opening a vintage shop. When the opportunity came along to purchase an old 1965 double decker bus, she jumped on it. Thus, the birth of Lodekka-- Portland's only Double Decker Dress Shop. (You can read more details about her experience here). Of course, I have a few personal photographs from that first visit to share with you today:



















Everything from vintage clothing and sparkly purses to old maps, sewing patterns, brownie cameras and record albums can be found in the comfortably packed double decker (and the prices are good too). So, should you find yourself in Portland, Oregon, get thee to Lodekka. It's a vintage shopping experience like no other.

Hula Seventy: Happy Walls

Recently, I've been hit with the urge to turn the house upside down and start all over again. This is not exactly practical so I've been looking at ways to change things up without uprooting the entire family. What better place to start than the walls? Since we're renters (and, in our situation, not really allowed to paint), I've taken to moving all collections and framed pieces around-- I'm bringing in new pieces, storing a few that need a break, and mixing it all up. Since the house is sort of in jigsaw puzzle mode, I went looking for inspiration. Here's what I found:

Hula Seventy: Vivian Maier

By now, you've probably all read or heard about Vivian Maier-- a nanny/amateur street photographer whose extraordinary photographs remained unknown (and mostly undeveloped) until they were discovered shortly after she died by a young man named John Maloof. If you haven't yet heard the story, then you're in for a treat. Born in New York but raised in France, Vivian Maier moved back to the states and worked as a nanny in Chicago for forty years. During that time, she took about 100,000 photos.

I first discovered her work about a year ago. I'd fallen down an internet rabbit hole one night (as I so often do) and somehow found myself at John Maloof's blog-- the one he started to share her photographs and chronicle the process. I found myself visiting again and again, hoping to see more work posted, hoping to hear a little bit more about her life. Recently, it seems as if the whole story has sort of blown up (it's everywhere) and this is such a good thing. To see her story, her work finally getting the attention it so deserves... well, it's exciting and not something that we often get to watch unfold in real time.

I'd love to share a few Vivian Maier favorites with you today. A few that take my breath away, a few that I keep revisiting:

It's that time of year again, folks. January. A clean slate, a fresh start. But also, grey, dreary and cold-- especially for those of us living here in the great Pacific Northwest. I believe it was this time last year that I indulged in a little color therapy here at Poppytalk. I think we might need another round. I know I do. Hula Seventy: Sfgirlbybay's Home (The Polaroid Edition)

Many of you probably saw Victoria's awesome home in issue one of Rue magazine a while back. If you missed it, you might want to take a look. Because it's gorgeous. Probably even somewhere beyond gorgeous, which is why it felt a little like I'd won the lottery when I got the chance to spend a few nights with Victoria recently. Sometimes pictures can make a place seem too good to be true. But in real life, Victoria's home did not disappoint. Not even a little bit. And let me tell you, I am usually very conservative with my polaroid film but one look at her casa (and all that clean light) and all bets were off. The sun came out and so did the camera. Lookie:

I think what I love most about 'Roid Week is seeing all the different cameras and instant films people use-- from expired polaroid to fuji instax to the exciting new instant films from The Impossible Project, there's no end to the variety. And there's no end to the inspiration.

Built Like This: Solo show by Andrea Corrona Jenkins

Capturer of magical colour, Portland-based photographer Andrea Corrona Jenkins (a.k.a. Hula Seventy) heads south to San Francisco this week for a show of her work titled, "Built Like This". Opening this Friday, October 22nd at Arkay Workshop (a shop in the mission) and will run through to December 31st. If you're in the San Francisco area, Andrea will be there for the opening with word of possible bells on! She'll also be teaching a one day through the viewfinder photography workshop October 24th. Awesomeness at it's best!
