Hi, Janet and Stu again from Three Potato Four.

Being a husband and wife team, we are constantly inspired by other couples who have ventured together to pursue a passion and create successful businesses. One of our favorite and most inspiring shop/brand/couples whom we truly admire is Andy Spade + Kate Spade and the amazing shop: Jack Spade.

We fell in love with the store when we first walked by it in Soho many years ago, spotting the library cart of books outside. The aesthetic and concept of Jack Spade is, in Andy Spade's words “taking all the things I like and putting them in one store". A weathered red sofa complete with patches of duct tape sits inside, which the shop purchased from an auction at a Pennsylvania firehouse. Mixed in with the Jack Spade bags and accessories are seemingly random but carefully curated objects each with their own curious nature and story to tell. Although these objects might traditionally seem out of place, when tied together in the overall environment, they each take on a stronger and more meaningful purpose - sort of working off each other, molding and defining the Jack Spade brand and leaving that impression on anyone who visits.

The shop has certainly stayed with us and has definitely had a strong influence in what we strive to achieve for Three Potato Four.

LOST RIVER MODERN

Hello, Janet and Stu here from Three Potato Four. Thought we'd share a little family trip with you that we took recently. Between owning a small business and two young kids (3 years + 4 months) sometimes getting away for a bit is desperately needed. Recently the four of us retreated to this amazing secret hideaway called Lost River Modern, a prefab cabin in the woods of West Virginia. It is set upon a steep hill in the mountains, where you truly feel like you are in a treehouse. Looking out through a wall of windows, we were lucky enough to catch the last of the Fall leaves. The cabin was designed by the award-winning, New York City-based architecture firm Resolution:4 Architecture (who also created the original dwell home) and is run by a young husband and wife couple from DC. It was a much needed and much appreciated break (especially the bacon, eggs and toast in the morning and smore's at night), if only for a few days. Our only regret was not venturing out onto the "logging trail", which looked as mysterious as it did precarious with a baby in-tow.

Hi everyone! This is Stu & Janet, we are the owners of Three Potato Four, a little online shop that specializes in unique modern and vintage goods. We also have a blog about our daily lives and the in's and out's of running our store and balancing work and family with our small business. We are extremely honored to be Guest Blogging here at Poppytalk this week and hope to bring you some inspiring reads.

For our first post, we are highlighting the amazing design/illustrative/typographic work of Jim Datz. Aside from an impressive sense of type, color, pattern and illustration, I think that what attracts us most to Jim's work is that everything is fun and playful and seamlessly combines vintage and modern design sensibilities - something that we always strive for with the product mix at Three Potato Four.

Here are just a few of the pieces from his ever-expanding portfolio, including this Manhattan print, which is a Jim Datz/Three Potato Four collaboration that just arrived from the printer last week and now available in our shop.
