a couple really good shows

Two fantastic shows are opening Thursday Oct. 2 on the west coast. First off, in San Francisco over at Rare Device they have artist, Sarajo Frieden who in this exhibit explores our metaphorical resonance with getting lost.

Secondly, the next one takes us to Portland, Oregon to The Grassy Knoll Gallery and new works by animation and graffiti artist, Ward Jenkins. The show is titled "b-boy" a tribute to the early boogie boys of the Bronx, the original poppin’ & lockin’ dancers who kept the parties live back in the day, back when hip-hop was in its golden, embryonic stage. Using various ‘lo-fi’ materials and surfaces, such as found cardboard, wood, and linoleum, Ward harks back to the essence of the early ingenuity and innovation of hip hop.

Vancouver fashion designer, Catherine Regehr has moved into the decor realm with a new home line of cushions, bedding, throws and robes inspired by her log roadhouse purchased fifteen years ago in the Yukon. With the help of First Nation’s artists from the Kwanlin Dün and other Yukon bands , she has created labour intensive bead and quillwork pieces using local materials, and the prose of Robert W. Service.

Love the illustration (animated) in this music video from the Swedish (Gothenburg) group, El Perro Del Mar. Moustaches and all. It was done by Asa Arnehed. There's a nice retro, feel-good air to it. (via Meet Me at Mikes).

holiday decorating

Happy October! We know there’s still a few weeks until Halloween, but it might take a bit to find the notions and vintage hardware to replicate this stunning midnight hour carriage lantern we spotted in the September/October issue of Hallmark Magazine. Using ornate metal belt buckles, a lamp finial and drawer pulls, they’ve created a magical and we think amazing idea.

Hallmark has posted the instructions at their website, how to make this one and we've been on the hunt for some hardware links to help out the situation. We posted about some drawer pulls from TrulyMadlyVintage.etsy.com (above) a while back and we're thinking, even old brooches, mirrors, and things like that may work. Pork Chop Show makes these typewriter and vintage keys by taking photos of actual vintage and antique typewriter keys and door keys, applying the paper images to baltic birch board and then cutting them with a laser cutting machine.
