High + Low Modular Shelving Systems

This past week Moco Loco posted about this module plywood system (above) by Post Fossil. Acting as shelving, the simple plywood boxes are all held together by a system of standard foldback clips. No tools required. And coincidentally, I had a similar modular box type system bookmarked (see below)- only made with a much cheaper cardboard material through an etsy shop called Recyclebox for $36. All of a sudden DIY's just got a little bit more interesting with these two brilliant ideas.

Loving this idea of wallpapering furniture. Bryonie Porter creates these beautiful papered pieces using wallpaper on antique and modern furniture. Using a water-based (environmentally friendly high gloss laquer) she transforms sometimes humdrum pieces into stunning works of art. I recently came across her work via Skonahem (the blog) and subsequently when I did a search I found an interview via CasaSugar.

recent design grad: zoe murphy

I recently came upon the work of recent Loughborough graduate, Zoe Murphy out of the UK and her re-use of mid century furniture. Graduating with a first class degree in Printed Textiles, Zoe's work has already been exhibited at Free Range design shows, New Designers 2008, and at the Old Town Gallery in Margate (her seaside home).

Mixing urban and coastal images onto un-loved furniture and textiles, her mediums range from wood veneers and formica to silk from old wedding dresses. According to her profile, "The pieces "re-use", "re-flect" and "love what belongs to us", whether that is celebrating a fading home town or rejuvenating objects that seem disregarded. Zoe's prints and processes encourage the ecological alternatives to "throw away" design in a promising and optimistic way". (via bettyjoy).

dwell lounge chair

blu dot unveiled the dwell lounge chair at the international contemporary furniture fair today in new york.

the chair, designed by ralph rapson was the result from a design competition held by dwell and blu dot. rapson is a well-known mid-century designer from minneapolis who died on march 29th, just weeks befor the chair was completed. (via shine).
