Built out of their shared interest and love for patterns and hand printed textiles, artists, Roisin Fagan (Bespoke Uprising) and Arounna Khounnoraj (Bookhou) have combined forces to create Repeat; a collection of beautiful hand printed hemp/organic fabrics, notions, badges, remnant bags and kits. Their line is available for preview at their new site, and their shop will be live in a few weeks.

stitchdraw

I came across these wonderful stunning stitch drawings today via my twitter that I just couldn't resist sharing due to their awesomeness. Textile artist, Rosie James has started a new blog called, stitchdraw where she will be sharing her drawings (with needle and thread). Currently she is drawing her workshop/shed starting from one corner and working her way around back to the starting point, to create a kind of flattened panaorma of a space. We love these images where you can see her beautiful work more clearly. It has been positioned so that the drawn elements are more or less outlining the actual elements. This is most clearly seen with the image of the sewing machine. Beautiful.

We came across this willow playhouse designed by UK designer, Judith Needham through the latest issue of Small Magazine (Spring '09). "Faced with buying her daughter a plastic play house, Needham put her weaving skills to work, designing and making a magical dream house out of willow".

Handmade Runway @Chanel Couture 2009

Don't get me wrong. I love my life. But just once (well ok, maybe more than once), I would love to be in the front row of a Chanel runway show like this. And is this runway from the Chanel Couture 2009 show not amazing? Love all these white flowers everywhere, it's like a giant pop-up book! Beautiful.

According to Chanel's news page, the decor was made up of monochromatic arrangements of paper roses, daisies, leaves and petals that wound their way up and around the room's 32 columns and draped over the railings of the entryway staircase. There were 7000 handmade paper flowers made which took 4,800 hours to work and assemble. 4000 m2 of paper was used to create these. Stunning!

It sounds like things are a buzzing as vendors set up this weekend for the NYIGF happening this week. Former PHM participant, Jill Rosenwald emailed us with her and her husband Lawrence's newest line, called Switch. It is similar to the Swiss lamp featured in the article we were mentioned in for Real Living Magazine this past month, with lots of slices and holes perforating the surfaces along with some great new high fire glazes. If you're going to the show, be sure to stop by to meet them at Booth 35021 on Pier 92.

se souvenir - first poppytalk video

here's our very mini (46 seconds) and spinny first video production for poppytalk. (note to self, focus and stop swirling). it's from the se souvenir show i wrote about yesterday. e did a great job editing my very short and shakey clip. (don't blink or you might miss it).

chez sucre chez

for the past few months, kimberly of chez-sucre-chez has been on a cross stitch kick and having trouble dropping the habit. each time she tries to get out of it and back to other crafts, she finds some other theme or inspiration to explore. her latest series is inspired by traditional motifs found on samplers done by pennsylvania dutch women from the 1700's and early 1900's.

she's gearing up for the renegade craft fair in brooklyn this summer and has a bunch of pieces in her etsy shop right now. she plans on going forward with these motifs and incorporating them, via block or screen prints onto bags and domestic goods (kitchen towls, aprons or whatever she ends of making).

i absolutely love these screenprinted handbound books and things i just found last night on etsy. nightjar books uses recycled, reclaimed and repurposed materials in all of their handmade products. out of toronto, ontario!

paloma's nest

i just found this lovely etsy shop called, paloma's nest out of austin, texas. it's creator, caroline colom vasquez hand-crafts each piece in her studio using natural materials such as wood, fabric, paper and clay.

organic shapes

beautiful organic shapes porcelains from etsy seller, elsita. they are part of a series called "silence" that she made in 2001. the colors are delicate and look like something found in nature as stated in the description. she also makes these amazing miniature paper sculptures (below).

collecting: quill embroidery baskets

i've seen these quillworked baskets throughout the years growing up here in canada, and recently had read an article on canadian house and home about collecting them.

quillwork (porcupine and bird) is generally identified with the mi'kmaq and ojibway of eastern canada. glass beads soon replaced the harder to use quills as a means of decoration when they were introduced into north america by the europeans as a trading item resulting in the craft of quilling becoming almost totally lost.

apparantly only a handful of canadian native women keep this unique craft alive which requires many hours to create. just the sweetgrass alone which is used for the rim is collected from late june to mid august and is then prepared for by blanching and drying. the birch bark collected in early spring requires precision and skill to strip the fresh bark and leaving the tree intact.

the baskets still being crafted today start as small as a 3 inch diameter box. older and antique boxes can be found at auctions and antique shops across the country. online link and resource: snowgoose.on.ca.
