valerio berutti
some ghost-like art to adore from valerio berruti out of verduno.
graduating in art criticism at D.A.M.S. of torino, he now lives and works in verduno in a 17th century deconsecrated church in which he bought and restored in 1995.
happy halloween!
something a little spooky to post in tune for the day ahead, this rather adorable nelson zoo timer omar the owl clock designed by george nelson in 1965 and reproduced now and available at hive modern. $125
also some favorite takes on the jack-o-lantern:
alex's orangey/blue pumpkin
kim's pineapple jack
space age bachelor pad switch
always a geek for technology. (especially when it makes life easier). a remote on/off light switch for that space-age bachelor pad.
now for some esquivel.

chine-collé
i learned about chine-collé this past summer (thanks ya ya girls!); a print technique using an etching in which "an image is printed on a lightweight (japanese) paper that is bonded to a heavier (usually western) paper as it is printed. the purpose is to allow the printmaker to print on a surface that has more interest and more ink-receptivity which pulls finer details off the plate".
i was instantly attracted to this multi-layered art and doubly pulled in by it's process. here, a piece i found by cybèle young, who had given a course recently on this printmaking method at the japanese paper place in toronto.

as seen on fototiller.
hvd steinzeit
i'm really attracted to handlettering right now. perhaps it's because of margaret kilgallen's work that is lingering in my subconscious, or maybe it's viewing david carson's trips to south america rubbing off, but whatever the case, i was thrilled to see this superb (and free) font from hvd fonts. it's called hvd steinzeit and is available through dafont.
thanks hvd!

bark bark
i regrettably was unable to get to the vancouver home and interior design show this past weekend. and am really crushed i was unable to see bark's all terrain cabin especially. so i thought the next best thing was to feature a few of my favorite contributors (products that were featured in the cabin). atc is a "a cabin, using the standard ISO shipping container as the basis for the structure and outfitting it totally with canadian design and technology. the result is as smart as it is efficient, suitable for a family of four and a pet to live off the grid in comfort and contemporary style. it travels by train, truck, ship, airplane or helicopter, folded up and indistinguishable from any ordinary shipping container. once it arrives, it unfolds rapidly to 480sf of self-contained, sophisticated living space with all the comforts of home".
one of my favorites would have been karlin macaskill's hanging plywood ornaments (see above middle inset). macaskill is an industrial design student at the emily carr institute of art and design here in vancouver.
i would've also probably highlighted the matrio dining table by victor chan.
and very especially, the paper soft seating (left) by molo design.

vancouver home and interior design show - oct 12 - 15/06
looking forward to the vancouver home and interior design show this weekend. hoping to take in a few highlights explained from their site:
gau designs and east meets west. east meets west will showcase work from design disciplines such as furniture, lighting, graphics, & architecture. a new generation of display – it will be dynamic, flexible, and animated by light and sound.
bark bark. the canadian debut tour of the all-terrain cabin, a 420 square foot, fully outfitted cabin for the 21 st century—mobile, self-contained, low-impact, smart, tough, cool, and all canadian. based on the ISO container format, it can be transportable to any place in the world. when it gets to its destination the contents won't be unloaded, instead the entire shipment will unfold, deploy, and spread its wings to become the all terrain cabin (ATC).
the elements of home. elements of home features locally and sustainably designed products that surround us in our homes. this exhibition is designed to appeal to a wide audience; from those intrigued by eco-chic to those interested in practical ‘green' building products.
