claire platt - uwe student degree show exhibit
i came across this amazing display of embroidery work from the uwe degree show in england by student, claire platt. posted on flickr by crunch candy. i happened upon it after searching for embroidery art there and landed upon this golden nugget. her artist statement on her blog for this piece states, "My work is primarily concerned with the 'female' language of stitch and it's decorative qualities. I play with a recognised formal portrait format and anatomical drawings. I hope to engage the viewer in questioning recognition of their own body and their similarities with others." you can see more close-up shots on her blog. i like the surprise of sequines mixed within the embroidery.

burgundynbrown: bridesmaid screenprint
"me next" fine art silkscreened print
ah. rabid bridesmaids at a bouquet toss. an homage to the desperation i feel in having gone to a new salon yesterday to color my hairs "slightly darker" only to find myself looking like morticia addams' and orphan annie's tall wan love child. eight days is plenty of time to fix this, right?

weekly DBA: wedding coozies
this week's david's bridal award: bride and groom beer coozies
if you're going to drink beer from a can on your wedding day, and i have *nothing* against that, i must say, must there be maribou feathers involved? have you ever dealt with wet maribou feathers? don't answer in front of your betrothed.
how does one spell coozie, anyway? koozy? qoozi?
again, not speaking from the high ground -- one of my mom's wedding favors was bright neon-colored foam beer coozies that said 'changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes...'
neither of these things is nearly as bad an idea as the maribou feather
bridal shot glass. hmmm... don't remember anything after the macarena... and why the hell are these feathers in my teeth? pfffft.
(what's a DBA?)

unlesssomeonelikeyou: poster invitations
custom poster wedding invitation
something modern and different -- 11" x 17" poster invitations, mailed in cardboard tubes. there are a couple of different styles posted, and unlesssomeonelikeyou makes the incredibly generous offer to custom design one for you *before* you buy -- with line drawing of your photo as above or any other thing your heart desires -- *and* she sends you the posters and tubes all ready to go.
plus she makes a great suggestion -- have the poster matted without glass, set it out at the reception, and have everyone sign it as the guestbook. so much more personal than one of those pottery barn frame thingies! she'll even mat and frame it *for* you. only on etsy, i swear. more at unlesssomeonelikeyou.etsy.com

pure modern
i wish i could get a bigger image of this ecosphere in it's entirety because i'm sure it's amazing. enclosed in glass, this miniature ecosystem is self sustaining with the perfect balance of animal and plant life. inside each sphere are algae, shrimp, and micro-organism in natural sea water. they have a life expectancy of 2+ years and require no feeding or cleaning. from pure modern.

picture frames and placement
reading one of my favorite blogs this morning, sfgirlbybay, (who's been so busy redecorating fabulously btw), just posted about her artwork and the artists, i noticed the placement of of it all. using different colored ribba frames from ikea victoria's arrangement really works so well above her sofa. not hung too high and scattered together like a puzzle.
i also love the placement of these pieces by lisa congdon (above) at the candy store (i think i took a virtual trip to san francisco last night by the looks of some of my posts lately). it came to mind when i saw domino magazine's slideshow on picture framing tips (image below). i like allegra hick's advice to use different frames to avoid the gallery look.
