been looking around with my camera lately for some good graffiti from here that i could post. but it's funny, as soon as you have camera in hand, it's hard to find. whenever you're not ready you always find something; but because i've been towing this camera around, not much to see. it seems to be that way with alot of things. anyway, here is a bit, and i'll keep looking.

window dressing
there's a consignment clothing store in vancouver called front & co. which always has a wonderful window display. this time it's these intricate beautiful cakes. we were driving by yesterday and i just had to stop to take a picture. i thought they were real and then when i got closer saw that they were all made from paper.

a french thing
i love rooms like this. where everything you dig and doesn't make any sense actually works together in a "never thought about it one bit" type of design. i like that about alot of things. the way one dresses (puts together an ensemble that looks thrown together and not thought about too much). it's a special gift to have that, ummm "savoir fare". i saw alot of it when living in montreal. maybe it's a french thing.
anyway i dig this room (in paris) and would you believe children actually live there?

i poppy
there are some beautiful poppies growing in a garden down a couple blocks from our place on the way to the park right now. they are so huge and colorful. red ones and pink ones. so i just had to take a couple photo's. they didn't turn out as well as i thought so will have to go and take a few more before they disappear. apparantly their bloom doesn't last very long.

sunday reading
how cool is this. going through the new york times this morning found some interesting items about design to peruse.
like this chandelier, a slide show of a pad in paris, a modern home in texas and some other interesting tid bits. so grab some coffee and have a nice relaxing sunday read.

a flickr find
thanks to red currant i linked onto this beautiful travelling journal - it is most inspirational and makes me want to get down to business with the 700 plus photos sitting in my iphoto. what a great eye and a must see!

your serve
did i say i was tired of stripes? well, not on a salad server. this fun melamine collection comes in several graphic modern patterns in that child-proof 60's nostalgic material made by french bull. love!

and these
will go well in that tiki hut. just the right color and size. dig these floor cushions perhaps two plopped onto each other.
from pb teen. i like the choices there more than the pb itself. not so heavy and clunky like some of their regular fare and some fun things not only just for the younger set.

graphics for the committment phobic
oh these are for me. created by and for people who like to change their mind. these surface graphics (think stickers for adults) are self-adhesive wall decals that allow you to easily transform your wall or whatever in minutes. plus they are cool looking. they even have words that can be custom made - perhaps a poem you would like to apply to your wall (that's how they all started).
one of those "wish i would've thought of that" ideas.

senseless acts of beauty
nice shot taken somewhere in budapest according to good graffiti.org, a place to upload and share your graffiti pics. kind of a cool idea.
you can view by city, send a postcard, share photos and discuss "what is good graffiti" in the forum. i think i'll bookmark it and see how it goes.

ware to dinner?
now there's a nice aqua. that's what i'm looking for. these would be a nice addition to a dinner on the patio.
they have that birthstone turquiose that i have been obsessing over. don't mind that lime green with it - kind of works that combo.
these are from canada's own caban too.

group vases
i'm on the lookout for a group of vases like these, however i would prefer them in an aqua color.
these are designed by christian tortu and made in france. pretty reasonably priced too. might have to go in to see the amethyst and anis color. what color is anis?

hand made modern
i think this book would be sooooooooo much fun! lots of little cheapo projects to cool'n things up.
a d.i.y. take on mid century modern so the write up says.
there's a fun little lamp shade project in there that could work if you're bored with a shade that you're not too attached to and would like to spruce up.
just might have to order this baby if i can't find it locally.

timo
this timo fabric on these pillows is really working for me. i especially like the orange and brown one, still haven't tired of that color combo yet.
these were found at bg shop somewhere in japan. need to email my friend there and see if they can tell me more about this place. it looks like timo stands for textiles in modern objects but that's all that was in english and that they were 2,800 yen.
thanks one good bumblebee for the cool link via design sponge. i'm starting to think i say cool too much but is there a better word to describe all these?

wood drops
these have become the number one "must haves" on my want list! so adore these! made from ebony - remind me of those polished rocks my dad used to design jewelry with back in the 70's.
they can be ordered here. thanks for the link from superhero designs who has some nice jewelry herself.
i would like some of this wood for my walls.

rock on
finally a rocking chair that has no colonial knobs attached. designed by montreal's patrick messier initially for his expecting wife, this chair was recently featured at the 2005 international contemporary furniture fair held in new york over this past weekend.
the designer created a limited, numbered edition of 20 chairs that have the cursive lilt of persian script but are actually designed on a grid based on the recursive Fibonacci sequence (whatever that means). MAMMA comes in custom colors.

sunday reading
due to the motherhood lifestyle i've been living, the only thing i read these days are magazines as i can get a quick article in here and there versus a book where i'll pick it up and read the same paragraph over and over due to time constraints. hence, i'm a bit of a magazine freak and am always on the lookout for a good quality one. i ordered this magazine here the other day when i was looking for a link for my chairs. i've noticed it seems to be a trend happening in europe where the manufacturer is starting to publish these types of magazines. so if you can get past the proverbial advertising - the quality of the articles hopefully makes up for it. per kitschenette's reccommendation i ordered this magazine which arrived last week (much to my surprise as i totally forgot about it). it had some great articles in it on what is happening in zurich (this month's issue city) and designing the future. it also came with a cd with some tunes and things. p.s. - and they are free.

a spring tulip
i'm so thrilled we bought this tulip table today to go with our chairs. the white table really clicks with the dark wood chairs - and our dining room is a hip happening! we've had these chairs for a while and had picked up a dark wood table to go with it back then and it was just getting too dark and heavy. so we've lightened up for the spring. we even got a new work desk as we had a tall dark one before. now i'm back on the floor and much more comfortable.

musee du louvre
i can't find an inspiration today to post so how 'bout this diversion to the louvre. i was so overwhelmed when i was there that i didn't appreciate it as much as i should've - so clicking on the virtual tours can sort of bring me back a bit. sometimes i wish i was lost there like petite.

found another one by andrea gregis
this one looks like it was done for greenpeace. it has a real underwater feel to it.
i am digging the colours being used or hues of. they have an old yet new sense to them. quiet and understated. but so familiar. i'm looking forward to finding more work by her.

spaces
the museum of anthropology at the university of british columbia here in Vancouver has a great hall that was designed by architect, Arthur Erikson, that when you walk into it you are in awe. i don't know if it's the floor to ceiling 15 meter windows that look out onto the ocean and coastal mountains, or if it's the ancient totem poles inside that do it, well, probably a combination of it all, but you just get this feeling you'd like to stay there. some homes have that same sense about them, there is just a vibe, that feels right. i'm longing for a space like that to call home, and really settle into. the photo shown here of the great hall doesn't really give it justice, however if you go to their site, you can see a bigger version and hopefully get what i mean. a great space.

korean patterns
i also like these korean patterns including the dancheong you'll find here. some of them remind me of my childhood a bit.
either we had wallpaper or drawer liners with these patterns, i'm not sure, but they seem to have been around at one point and i can see some relevance in them in today's design. last fall i was really gravitating towards these patterns and couldn't find any fabric anywhere. i'm not so stuck on them now, but it's interesting how patterns/designs do that to me. a few years back i couldn't find any stripes and i was so much craving striped pillows - and not just any stripe i wanted different weighted stripes in thick and thin lines and couldn't find any fabric anywhere to even make a pillow or whatever. now you can't get away from them - but i'm trying.
