nando costa

nando costa (one of my hero designers) has been interviewed by pingmag.

he mentions in the interview he will be involved in developing a site basically like the Wikipedia Encyclopedia but about design. it's format won't be like wikipedia, but more like a blog with something new to look at everyday. this one i look forward to.

his new book, "disorder in progress" features work by his wife, linn olofsdotter and edurardo recife to name a few is now available in his new store section on his site. if you're interested in seeing photos of the printing process, which was finished in february of 2006, please visit flickr.

update: just found a new interview on linn olofsdotter here at taxi.

ona poppies

what? more pillows? but not just any pillows. poppy pillows and one of the more beautiful examples i've seen yet. so i can't help but stop and say "hey - look at these". by gabriela filimonova these hand-painted poppy pillow covers are made of 100% linen. and another take on them here. i also love this poppy rug by ruta butenaite. all from ona.com.

pantone notebooks

my friend alex showed me these pantone notebooks the other day and i was instantly smitten with the thin-lined pages. and the price. this little notebook here is only approximately $3.75 canadian. such a deal .

their collection consists of notebooks, file folders and business card holders in 7 colors for each of the seven days of the week allowing users to organize by color or simply express their individuality.

i heart switch

i heart switch is a d.i.y. online site/vlog on making things. only one installment so far; and it looks fairly easy, combining electronics and such to make fun and fashionable items. and a rather nicely designed site i might add. (via cool hunting).

crochet then felt

felt, originally uploaded by poppytalk.

took these pictures from a friend's copy of family circle easy crochet - fall/winter 2005. the colors are a bit off but this tea cozy makes me want to become a tea tottler. i don't have a clue how to crochet - but i think i'm going to have to learn. and i kind of like the idea of felting afterwards - it's like shrinking on purpose. sort of fun by accidental purpose.

amazing felting

square palette, originally uploaded by Clementine's Shoes.

this project amazed me. by di of clementine's shoes. if i'm understanding it right, first she knit stocking pelt after stocking pelt, then she machine felted those pelts, then she cut them into these squares, (that would be hard to do and get straight in itself) and then she made them into kids stuffed blocks! amazing! (via whip-up).

banksy does hollywood

the visual dictionary

the visual dictionary is a collection of words in the real world. photographs of signage, graffiti, advertising, tattoos, you name it, they're trying to catalogue it into a dictionary.

they don't have alot of words or images yet, but soon they will be adding flickr support and a bunch of other bits of functionality, but for now, they're just trying to drum up interest, and content. great idea and nicely designed site. (via uppercase journal).

this is a glass cake

it's amazing what people are doing and can do, especially when it comes to hot melting glass.

elaine li is a glasswork artist out of brooklyn, new york who designs not only glass cakes, but other sculptures that look like undersea creatures, like jellyfish.

check out her movie on the process too while visiting her portfolio site. (via the gothamist).

scrunch pendant shade

found this scrunch pendant shade from cotswoldco out of the uk. and such a steal at only £34.95! WOWza!

it looks vaguely familiar. remember that post i did on scandinavian surface? well found out that particular chandelier in that photo was just a prototype and didn't really exist. perhaps this one could work.

lisa solomon

wall work 1, originally uploaded by dressform.

i am so in love with this installation by lisa solomon. what i'm digging is her restraint in using red; so difficult to do i would imagine and the 3d/2d effect. the doilie design is so stunning. they look like snowflakes floating about; how i would love this on my wall.

a recent interview on whipup explains a little bit about her style of work: "Often times I respond to a found material or paper – like rifle targets or vintage school paper [do you remember the kind that had a big space up top to draw and some lines on the bottom to write?? That kind!]. I have always loved and respected all things crafty and thus also wanted to incorporate those types of elements in my artwork. Thus there is often embroidery – thread of some kind, crochet, or other such things in my work. I tend to like to use thread as a drawing element. As a line quality. I have this whole philosophy of the front side vs. the back side of embroidery – and how both sides are actually beautiful and imply different things. I am really drawn to the idea of the domestic [celebrating that] – of how we clue into what is read as masculine and what is read as feminine. I am also fond of the idea of noticing the ordinary… And I’m fond of space…. How negative space is just as important as positive space.

I tend to see myself and my work in a framework of being hybrids… The idea that things cross pollinate and inform one another to become something different". read more here.

this installation named wall works 2 is on till august at the traywick contemporary gallery in berkely, california. you can also check out more of lisa's art at her website lisasolomon.com and be sure to check out her shop here for stationary, checkbook cozies, buttons and more.

graffiti research

eyebeam people have been doing some" insane graffiti research" according to the gothamist, and if this video is any proof, it should be a fun site. apparantly they have found a way to make "LED throwies" which can be thrown and stick to walls. (LED graffiti). check it out here. then learn how to make your own afterward. very very cool stuff.

customized birth announcements

what a great idea for a birth announcement. by far the coolest you will ever find!

styled after gig posters for rock concerts. by rattle n roll. just send him an image of your baby and he'll customize it to your specs.

he even does birthday invites.

it's up - we heart gocco

we heart gocco is now online. a nice little gallery of the print gocco world.

background: "in december 2005, gocco’s parent company, riso, announced they are discontinuing manufacturing the print gocco system due to low sales in japan. savegocco.com was created in december with hopes that it may not be too late to work together to find a new home for gocco outside of japan. for more information on the history of gocco and to find out how you can help, please visit savegocco.com ".

so fun to see one good bumblebee's work included. i also like aaron draplin's piece called, "things we love".

oh they are all great! some i mentioned earlier this week. so many! go see! we heart gocco!

vacant lot

vacant lot, originally uploaded by luckyfish.

this image by luckyfish caught my eye in flickr the other day and i immediately thought it was taken in new york. it just has that feel. perhaps it has something to do with the atmosphere the holga added to it, but it definitely did't look like vancouver. or the typical vancouver image. this is the eastside; and degan has captured it so well.

pillow fight club

i love the idea of a flash mob pillow fight club so much! it looks like a blast! found it on design public's blog (hatch). and the idea of making feather angels afterwards is so bliss.

found a few pillows while browsing, like this one by three sheets 2 the wind; the inhabit kaleidoscope minor pillow; the inhabit lifesaver pillow and i'm still digging the hybrid-home secret service design (in pink).

woodhouse be mine!

i'm rather digging this woodhouse chair by jonathan adler. i'm just imagining my hands tapping the slopes of the arms already!

heart tree + wall works

heart tree, originally uploaded by poppytalk.

finally. finished my heart tree just in time! was actually kind of nice to sit down and practice my blanket stitch using a thick embroidery thread. forgot how relaxing it was.

i'm thinking of my embroidery hero, lisa solomon and her participation in the big debut of the wall works show. so exciting! all the best lisa!
