photo rope

gotta get some of this magnetic photo rope from photojojo. using tiny little magnets, this rope is 43" long and comes with 8 magnets you can use to attach photos, postcards, or anything your heart desires.

the bottom of the cable is weighted to keep it straight, and a loop of cable at the top lets you hang the rope from anywhere. $16 each.

gocco show - call for entries!

haus53 is putting together a print gocco show in boston to raise awareness about the sad plight of print gocco being discontinued (see save gocco).

the deadline is a bit tight, but as they are expecting a good turnout, it should be a strong show. you can get all the details at www.haus53.com.

dermond peterson

thanks to design sponge for the tip on this dynamic textile duo dermond peterson design. i'd never heard of them before and was instantly impressed to see such gorgeous designs. i'm especially attracted to the red coral table runner (left) from their seaside line and this artichoke t-towel from their bumper crop line.

founded in 2001 by sisters, sandra dermond and susan peterson, dermond peterson design is an artisan/manufacturing company that combines the rich, tactile qualities of “fine-art” printmaking techniques with innovative and conceptual design strategies to produce fresh, functional textiles for everyday use at home.

read design sponge's coverage here where she also mentions she uses todd holland to buy her dermond peterson goods.
poppy's posts are all about kitchen stuff today, and to start out these cute little cupcake makers from williams-sonoma:

storage saver + great design

it feels like ages since i did a post on a great kitchen tool; but love this collapsible colander i found at momastore.org. an award-winning, design which was inspired by the expandable sun shield of an old camera. $65

or this one from solutions.com. price $14.95

they store flat in a drawer when not in use. pasta won't stick to the silicone surface; heat resistant to 500°F and dishwasher safe.

hobsnobs

i'm so glad to have finally found this website for vancouver based, hob snobs. after eyeing their product at my favorite papiere for quite sometime now, i just stumbled upon their site via shop cocoon, a store down on cambie i posted about back last february. anyway, hob snobs is sasha barry, heather emery, carley hodgkinson, and valerie thai; a vancouver-based art & design collective making charming, eclectic, and fashionable mix of items for the home, closet, and everyday living. unfortunately their site is under construction, but at least you can get a sense of what they have to offer. i am in love with their wooden pencil boxes, with burnt engraving of charming squirrels and other forest images. they remind me of an old chess set, where the lid slides back and forth to open and shut. i must get down to shop cocoon to take a peak at what's new there.

out bid

a while back (and a mean awhile, time just keeps slipping on me), i attended a student art auction at the emily car institute of art and design. while i couldn't make it for the actual auction, i bid on a couple items using the absent bid process. i obviously underbid and never received a phone call that i bought something, but these pics i keep seeing them in my iphoto gallery and wish i had won at least one of them. my favorites? these two. a photo series of a long alley in the downtown eastend and a flowered canvas with a screenprint of a fisher price toy with the most amazing pink. i love student art.

meanwhile, while visiting the eciad site, i noticed an interesting exhibit coming up this august called, bag and baggage. "bag and baggage addresses the challenge that visual artists must overcome to exhibit their art away from their place of residence - it is a challenge that has become more evident in recent years as the artworld has become more globalized and more international exhibition venues become available." it is the second part of a group exchange exhibition between marseille and vancouver that will take place in the concourse gallery of the emily carr institute of art and design, granville island, vancouver, b.c.

the rest of my photos from the auction can be seen here.

paper trade

just visiting ky's blog and see she's got some beautiful paper packs for trade. she's put together six parcels of paper for trade. origami, vintage and lots lots more. she's interested for trade in all things vintage - wallpaper, ribbon, and ephemera, as well as found papers and "location specific" ephemera. so if you're interested go to her blog right now, as i'm sure they won't last long!

up to you

just got word of this concept shop in toronto called, up to you. some fun products to see at their online shop from coat hangars to vintage terry towel soft animals.

dimitria, co-owner says "the idea behind our shop was to create a voyeuristic experience for our customer, therefore changing their patterns of choice. as a buyer my goal is to carefully choose designers from around the world, talk to them about their ideas and purchase pieces that promote individuality amidst a world of cookie-cutter imagery and products."

products shown (clockwise): vintage terry towel cloth softie; kaleidoscope cameras; baby plane spoon and baby cup.

forty new eclecto books

last tme i posted about these books, they were almost all sold out before we could get our hands on them! well maybe this time one might have a chance and i'm thrilled with the 50's design.

each book has at least 50 pages, including various ephemera from bingo cards, paper money and various other types of paper - perfect for collages as they so explain on their site.

from those talented folks at uppercase.

they were featured at the m.a.d.e. show held at the gladstone hotel in toronto last weekend.

(sidenote: i thought another exhibitor, bunnyshow had a cute website.)

10x10, lark8thave and photobooth fridays

every hour, 10x10 scans the RSS feeds of several leading international news sources, and performs an elaborate process of weighted linguistic analysis on the text contained in their top news stories. after this process, conclusions are automatically drawn about the hour's most important words. the top 100 words are chosen, along with 100 corresponding images, culled from the source news stories. at the end of each day, month, and year, 10x10 looks back through its archives to conclude the top 100 words for the given time period. in this way, a constantly evolving record of our world is formed, based on prominent world events, without any human input. interesting.

other things going on today:

big summer sale at lark 8th ave for those of you living or visiting vancouver. being the secret spy, i got an inside tip, that their nudie jeans will be 10% off starting friday to sunday only!

and don't forget to check photobooth friday!

get well soon masks

i was a tad curious when i first arrived in tokyo (pre-SARS days), and happened upon this surgical-mask wearing civilization. at first i thought there was something i was unaware of. then i found out how considerate this accessory really was. and it only makes sense these get well soon masks were on the horizon.

created by BOONDESIGN in Tokyo, "sterile white gauze masks worn in cold and flu season become something fun and cheerful" as stated on the design+ site. "there are currently 15 types of masks, varying from animal whiskers and snouts to ruby painted lips and geishas - one even has a zipper so the wearer can eat."

back to the future

i know this is old news, but i keep going back to it; mesmerized, inspired, in awe. something in the wood combined with the cream and red paints that takes this folk art so much into the future. also the handmade font, so perfectly raw and if only it could be bottled. i love this. this is what i want to be inspired by today. thank you hula for introducing me to margaret's work.

sooooo adorable! i just got a tip on this lovely shop, mahar dry goods out of santa monica, california.

and then finding these was just the topping on the cake. these fantastic baby booties are made by heather's treasure box, and are made to order. size 0 to 6 mos. $24.

all the items at mahar drygoods are created in the homes and studios of artists, designers and crafters who are thrilled to be sharing their talents. based on a 1930s children’s book cover design, the site features illustrations by rhode island artist, jen corace.

fontshop news

i just received a copy of fontshop news, a newsletter from the seller of fonts online. a few good articles to peruse:

deciphering the fonts in blueprint magazine and
graff artists mix styles in the exchange

also if you're really into fonts there are some great font blogs out there. first off, appropriately named, fontblog by jurgen siebert if you're lucky enough to read german. and unzipped, by yves peters. interesting reads and downloads, or like me, if i can't understand the german, just nice to look at the pictures.

if you would like to receive FontShop news, including notices of free font downloads, send mail to news@fontshop.com. an interesting read for you fellow alphabet friends.

more luren

last november i posted about luren jenison, a recent rhode island school of design graduate from the department of textiles and her beautiful wall hangings. it's so interesting to watch artists emerge and develop.

her bio reads, "she has been working within the scale of environment creation through interior design and textile design, as well as installation. her interests in the decorative arts lie mainly in the intersection of the surreal and the conventional. she collects images and examples of the bizzare, the grotesque, and the unexpected in designs for the home, and filters them through her personal style and color taste to create new works."

i just found out she has a new print and t-shirt out at art in the age (love the reds) and also has some silkscreened pillows at the cabin comforts store at secret project robot, 210 kent avenue, in williamsburg, brooklyn, new york.

luren is currently living and working in philadelphia. her site.

shoes for your walls

it looks like a shoe weekend here without even planning (read previous post) with the works of shoe designer, mark schwartz and his shoes as idea.

original art, limited edition prints of none other than shoes. love the black and white ones and of course who can resist a red shoe?

very unique and whimsical!
