Light and Bright: Scandinavia Meets California

I love this  Cape Cod–style cottage featured in House Beautiful this month (February issue). Located in Venice, California, designer Alexandra Angle mixed checks and stripes along with Swedish and Queen Anne–style furniture to create a bright and cheery space.  The home walls once enclosed with textured drywall has now been replaced with beadboard giving it a Scandinavian summer style.  With white flooring and light fabrics, the room has a bright and relaxed inviting vibe.  Photo's by Victoria Pearson.

Inspired by antique Swedish–style stoves, Alexandra came up with the idea of tiling the wall with antique Portuguese tiles, taking it all the way up to the ceiling, making it more of a focal point.

The upper-cabinets were replaced by open shelving (paint  Farrow & Ball's Teresa Green) and bronze finished bin pulls and knobs (by Rejuvination).  Angle said in reference to the pulls, "You can get too airy.  You need something dark to keep a room grounded".

Love the different textures of patio furniture.  Teak, a faux-bois concrete bench, floor pillows...

The bedroom has a real summery vibe pulling in again the Scandinavian–theme with some light cotton bedding in cool blue hues.
