PICK A PECK OF PRETTY PICKLED PEPPERS

by Jeannette Ordas of Everybody likes Sandwiches

I'm attracted to bright, bold hits of colour. Pops of colour in my clothes, on my walls and definitely I love seeing colour on my plate. When I spotted these bright peppers at my local Chinatown market, I remembered seeing a great recipe in the September issue of Bon Appetit for pickled peppers. And because the writer was the always amazing Molly of Orangette, I knew they'd be good.

Oh boy, were they ever good! Crispy and crunchy and a tiny bit sweet with a whoa-baby! smack as the vinegar hits the back of your throat. I spent one recent evening just snacking on these right out of the mason jar, but the original recipe states that these would be great with cheese or topped on some pizza. And I'd bet they'd be fantastic on top of burgers, sandwiches or hot dogs.

Pretty Pickled Peppers
(Adapted from Molly Wizenberg
in Bon Appetit)
4 large peppers (any colour)
, sliced into rounds with seeds removed
1 small onion or 2 large shallots
, thinly sliced
2
c white wine vinegar
1/2
c + 1 T sugar
3
T water
1 T fresh thyme

2
large garlic cloves, thinly sliced
2
dried red hot peppers (or 1 t crushed red peppers)
1/2 t kosher salt

Add the sliced peppers and the shallots separated into rings into a large bowl. Set aside.

In a small pot, bring to a boil the vinegar, sugar, water thyme, garlic, hot dried peppers and salt together until the sugar and salt melt into the liquid. Pour the hot brine over the peppers and shallots and cover with plastic wrap until the liquid is cool .

Tightly stack the vegetables into a large quart-sized mason jar and pour the brine over top, making sure that all the vegetables are submerged. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and up to 1o days.

Uppercase No. 3

The latest issue of Uppercase Magazine is out this week ( October 1st) which is inspired by gentlemanly pursuits: woodworking, axe design, lutherie, bespoke suits, cycling and sailing. Many of the artists, designers and shops we have featured at Poppytalk, also are making the pages of this Canadian-based publication. So if you like Poppytalk, you probably will like the beautifully-designed, Uppercase. Read interviews with The Regional Assembly of Text, Geninne Zlatkis, along with articles from our very own contributer, Hulaseventy and San Francisco's Sfgirlbybay. Click here to preview the entire issue (for a limited time) and here to secure a copy.

Also, Uppercase is now accepting submissions for their November/December exhibition! The Confections show celebrates the fine art of candy packaging. They are inviting artists to illustrate and design their own wrappers. Come up with an irresistible cover for a novel treat or create a new design for an old favourite. The best designs will be featured in the winter issue of the magazine. Submit your artwork file via email info-at-uppercasegallery.ca (images should be at least 6 to 8 inches wide at 300dpi). Also accepting confections-inspired artwork and photography. Deadlines: October 23 (for inclusion in the exhibition) November 1, 2009 (for possible inclusion in the magazine)

Fresh from the Oven: Christine "Forever" Young

by Will Bryant

Brooklyn illustrator, Christine Young, is ace! She has a BFA in Illustration from the Parsons the New School of Design.

I love how she celebrates personality in line quality and figure drawing. Her work gets a giggle from me every time.
I think she needs her own line of tee shirts and then make versions for kittens & puppies to wear around.

Plus, Christine is soooper nice so you should probably like her a lot.

Kimberly from Chez Sucre Chez has a new series of cross-stitch pieces up in her shop which we're betting Smiths fans are going to go bonkers over. She's taken a few of the band's lyrics and cross-stitched them in a script-y cursive font. Click here to see more along with the rest of her winter series.
