Sunday Reading: Lists by Liza Kirwin

Lists: To-dos, Illustrated Inventories, Collected Thoughts, and Other Artists' Enumerations from the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art by Smithsonian curator Liza Kirwin is a unique collection of ephemera of some of the most celebrated and revered artists of the last two centuries. Gathering samples from the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art, Kirwin creates a treasure trove for the artist buff, or for someone who seeks inspiration and loves firsthand accounts of our cultural history. It includes such things as artist's lists, visual inventories, and even a list by Eero Saarinen listing thirteen reasons why he loved art critic Aline Bernstein (his 2nd wife). As the book explains in it's introduction "This book urges readers to consider common lists as firsthand accounts of our cultural history". Lovely thought - who knew something so mundane as a list could become that.
