I think that we should all feed the birds. Especially the hummingbirds. And it wouldn't hurt to use one of these gorgeous hand-blown glass feeders by Chihuly-trained artist Peter Reuthlinger, either.
Watching hummingbirds flutter and drink has become one of my favorite summer pastimes. You can buy nectar, but I've found the homemade stuff is best and simple to make. Once you do, just fill up your feeder, hang it outside, and wait for the little flying jewels to arrive...
- Mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water and bring to a boil to kill any bacteria or mold present.
- Cool and fill feeder.
- Extra sugar water may be stored in a refrigerator.
- Red dye should not be added.
